Trip Itinerary

Day 1 Lanzhou Arrival

Welcome to Lanzhou - a city of Yellow River. Your tour guide will pick you up at the airport/train station in Lanzhou, and then escort you to your hotel in a private vehicle. Today you will visit the First Bridge on Yellow River. Named as Zhongshan Bridge to memorize Sun Yat-sen, this iron bridge was the first sample built by foreign technology in Northwestern China, already standing over 100 years. Then visit the White Pagoda Mountain on the north bank of the Yellow River. You can have a short walk to the top, or take a cable car running across the river. The mountain once was an ancient fortress and now is a large architecture complex with some temples, pavilions, archways and museum hillside open to public for free. Built in Yuan Dynasty with Lamasery features, White Pagoda Temple on the top is wildly regarded as “the Window of Lanzhou” - a must-visit where you can get an impressive panoramic view of Lanzhou city and the rushing Yellow River.

Tour Tips: You can take one-way cable car up to near the White Pagoda Temple and walk down to see spots en route.

Day 2 Lanzhou-Zhangye

Take the morning train to Zhangye (3.5 hours.) Upon arrival, meet your local tour guide, hop on your private vehicle to Zhangye Danxia Geopark directly. The Danxia Geopark was developed about 200 million years ago; it was mainly constituted by red gravel, sandstone and mudstone, with the imprint of a clear arid, semi-arid climate. Known for its colorful rock formations, it has been voted by Chinese media outlets as one of the most beautiful landforms in China. Take the shuttle-bus of the park , it stops at different platforms, enjoy amazing view of the nature and take many photo.

Tour Tips for Zhangye Danxia Geopark:
1. Pack with sun creams, sunglasses, protective clothing and hat to protect from strong sunlight in summer;
2. Sunset is the best time for taking photos which happen around 19:00~20:00 in summer and 18:00~19:00 in winter.

Day3 Zhangye – Jiayuguan

In the morning visit Dafo Temple in Zhengye city. The temple, also known as "Wofo Temple" (Sleeping Buddha Temple), it is very famous because it contains the biggest indoor sleeping Buddha in China. The temple was originally built in 1098, it was rebuilt many times in history, the temple now still preserved its original main buildings: Giant Buddha Hall, Buddhist Classics Hall, and Clay Pagoda. After the Buddha Temple, drive about 220km (2.5 hours) to Jiayuguan City and check in your hotel. Then go to visit "the First and Greatest Pass under Heaven", also the westernmost starting point of Great Wall of Ming Dynasty - Jiayuguan Pass. Jiayu Pass was built in the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644)  under the supervision of Feng Sheng, a founding general of the Ming Dynasty. When first completed, there were only ramparts surrounding the barracks. After 168 years of enhancements, the pass assumed its present appearance. Covering an area of 33,529 square meters (40,100 square yards), Jiayuguan Pass of Great Wall has a complex and integrated defensive system: an inner city, the central area with many buildings, an outer city, and finally a moat. You can also find common military facilities such as arrow towers, turrets, and cannons along the wall. Jiayuguan Pass was also a vital traffic fort along the Silk Road, the world's oldest trading route, connecting China, Central Asia and Europe.
If you have enough time and also interested, you can take an optional visit to the Xuanbi Great Wall (Overhanging Wall) which is about 18km away from the Fort. The walls were built on lofty cliffs with incredibly large gradient looking like an overhanging cantilever. You will geit  excellent views of the surrounding land and mountains when climbing up higher.


Day4 Jiayuguan – Dunhuang

After hotel breakfast, drive about 5 hours to Dunhuang. Visit the Crescent Lake and Singing Sand Dune . It is said, in the sunny days, the sand mountains echo like Orchestra music even if there is no wind. If you slide from the sand mountains, you can hear the echoing sound clearly. Surrounded by the Echoing Sand Mountains, Crescent Lake is a beautiful oasis with some well decorated traditional Chinese architecture, some trees and flowers and a lake that has never dried up and looks like a crescent moon.

Tour Tips in Dunhuang:
1. Go out for a walk in the Shazhou Night Market where you can try some local food, relax in a drinking bar, or buy some interesting handcrafts, etc.
2. Enjoy the fascinating Silk Road Show - Silk Road Flower Rain which is a relaxing feast of unparalleled visual beauty with impressively elaborate dances performed by professional dancers wearing stunning costumes and an incredible set design.

Day5 Dunhuang Departure

After breakfast, drive about 10km from the Dunhuang city to visit the newly opened Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center before go to Mogao Grottoes. Watch two short but well-produced educational documentary movies that introduce the history, arts, and other facts about Mogao Grottoes. After the movies, take the shuttle-bus to Mogao Grottoes. Mogao Grottoes is famed as the "Louvre of East", which is outstanding for its exquisite mural paintings and statues. There are now 492 grottoes in which about 45000 square meters mural paintings and 2100 colorfully painted statues from which you can trace the development of Chinese art over 1600 years from one dynasty to the next because each dynasty built own caves to record its own features. There are about 40 common caves opened to the public. In the tourist area, you will be divided into groups by different tour guides who will accompany you to visit 7-8 caves among them with great introduction. After the Grottoes tour, you can depart from Dunhuang.
