2 Days Wolong Panda Volunteer Tour at Shenshuping Base
Summary:
According to the China’s Third National Giant Panda Survey, Wolong National Nature Reserve houses about 150 wild individuals of highly endangered giant pandas. Wolong Nature Reserve is the largest and the most complicated in Sichuan, about 130 kilometers from Chengdu.
Wolong Giant Panda Reserve, belonging to the Wolong National Nature Reserve that is reputed as the “Panda Kingdom” and “Gene Pool of Precious Flora and Fauna”, is home to about 60 percent of the world’s total panda population. Standing about 1700 meters above the sea, Wolong Giant Panda Reserve is the world’s largest breeding center for the giant pandas with more than 50 captive pandas.
Since the severe big earthquake occurred in Wenchuan in 2008, the original Hetaoping Panda Base (核桃坪熊猫基地) was destroyed. To protect the precious giant pandas, government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region endowed to build the new panda base at Gengda Township (耿达镇) and called it Shenshuping Panda Base under the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) (中国大熊猫保护研究中心耿达神树坪基地). With the total area covering 150 hectares, Shenshuping (神树坪) Panda Base, or Gengda Wolong Panda Center is mainly divided into three areas for the different functions, namely the visiting area for captive panda, wild training area and reintroduction area. With rich types of facilities like 59 panda enclosures, tourist center, scientific research center, science education center, veterinary hospital, etc. Wolong Panda Reserve is at present the largest, most dynamic and self-sustaining base for giant pandas around the whole globe.

Day 1 Chengdu Arrival
Welcome to Chengdu, the hometown of Giant Panda.
Your local guide and driver will meet you at the hotel / airport / Railway station according to your schedule, and escort you to Wolong Town, driving about 2 hours and 20 minutes for about 130 kilometers.
Today, you are going to visit the Wolong Giant Panda Museum (or called Wolong Natural and Earthquake Museum). You will know more about giant pandas, fauna and flora species living in their habitats, culture and history about pandas with a lot of wonderful words introduction, picture and specimen displays and other vivid models. After this visit, your driver will transfer you to the accommodation near Shenshuping Panda Base. (Note: Please try to book flight or train arriving at Chengdu before 13:00, or you may miss the visit of the Panda Museum.)
If time permit , you can prepare for the exciting hike to Dengsheng Gorge.
The gorge, is an authentic natural habitat of wild giant pandas, together with other wild animals, such as white-lip deer and red pandas. Sponsored by Hong Kong people, the well-paved hiking trail is 5 km (3 miles) long and the hike takes about 2–3 hours. The forest and ecosystem along the trail are well preserved.
Day 2 Wolong Panda Volunteer (B, L)
After your breakfast, you will be transferred to Shenshuping Panda Base, which locates at a very primitive valley, the real home land for the giant pandas. Now let’s get your one full day’s Wolong panda volunteer program started!
08:45-09:00 Preparation
Arrive at the volunteer center at Wolong Panda Base, know about and sign the safety announcement, get your volunteer passing card, put on the working clothes and gloves, and deal with relative procedures under the help of the staff there.
09:00-10:20 Panda Cleaner
During the more than half an hour time, take the old bamboos out, damp the drops of pandas, know more about the living environment and conditions of pandas through careful observation, and clean their houses, etc.
10:20-11:00 Panda Breeding Area Visit
Visit the breeding area for giant pandas under the company of the staff of the science education center at the base. You can watch pandas playing together, eating bamboos, climbing trees, rolling on the ground, etc. This is a great moment to take pictures of these super stars.
11:00-11:30 Panda Feeding
Feed the giant panda by yourself with carrots, cakes, apples, etc. Watch the appearance while it is eating and know more about the diet features of pandas.
11:40-12:30 Lunch Time
Shenshuping Panda Base prepares nutritious lunch for panda volunteers at the dining hall. Enjoy your meal with the staff there.
12:30-13:00 Free Visit / Relax Time
Visit the panda base on your own freely to see the great living environment of pandas. Also, you can have a break at the panda volunteer center and prepare energy for activities in the afternoon.
13:00-14:00 Panda Theater
Enjoy the interesting movie about the giant pandas. Have a better understanding of the wild training and reintroduction of pandas and know about the great story of people living in harmony with pandas.
14:00-14:40 Panda Cleaner & Panda Feeding
Clean the colony house of giant panda and feed the adorable panda for one more time.
14:50-15:10 Panda Nutritionist
Know about what kinds of ingredients needed for panda cakes, and learn how to do the cakes for giant panda by yourself with the help of the staff.
15:20 End the Volunteer Program
Return the working clothes and passing card to the staff. Receive the panda volunteer’s certificate and other delicate souvenir to end your full day’s volunteer experience.
After that, your local guide and driver will escort you back to Chengdu. Tour ends

If you cancel or cannot take your tour as a consequence of force majeure, LeTourPanda will refund the amount you have paid less any non-recoverable out-of-pocket costs incurred on your behalf - car rentals, admissions, hotel reservations, tickets etc. We may require you to provide verification to confirm that you were unable to take your tour if you request a refund under this provision.
Force Majeure includes impersonal events such as war, civil insurrection, strikes, volcanoes, extreme weather, earthquake or natural disaster that makes it dangerous or impossible to safely undertake the tour. The determination of what constitutes 'Force Majeure' is at the discretion of LeTourPanda.
For cancellation due to any other reasons (such as illness, change of personal circumstances), the date on which the request to cancel is received by LeTourPanda will determine the refund due as follows:
If you cancel 7 days or more before the start of the tour:10% cancellation fee.
If you cancel 6 to 2 days before the start of the tour:50% cancellation fee.
If you cancel less than 1 day before the start of the tour or no show: 100% cancellation fee.
